Where are you today and what is influencing you?
Where I am today is where I have seen myself since I graduated high school in a community college continuing my education. I am currently finishing my associates in Social and Behavioral Sciences and Psychology; I’m getting ready to transfer to a University to continue to follow my dreams. I’m finishing my last year at Napa Valley College and trying to do my best in my classes this semester. My parents both migrated here not only for a better future for themselves but for their future children and as a first generation college in my family the motivation to attend a higher learning school is highly encouraged but it is challenging because my parents don’t know what is needed to get ready for transfer luckily there are many resources available at NVC who are willing to help get students ready to transfer. I have the opportunity to continue my education and I value that opportunity. I am also currently working as a licensed Esthetician. I was attending classes at NVC and classes at a vocational school at the same time; having an Esthetician license allowed me to get a job that I enjoy, it has also helped me improve my communication skills because I work with different people every day, and it also helps me get through college. I got my license not only for current employment but in the future my sister and I wish to co-own our own business in skin care.
One of my biggest influences is my family especially my mother who is a great motivator and a person that I admire, she is always pushing all her children to do their best for it pays off in the future. Another thing that influences me is statistics and the research studies that have shown that throughout the years Latino students tend to either dropout out of school or don’t continue higher education, I want to change that by finishing school and encouraging others to do so as well. I want to set an example to encourage my younger sister, Latino students, and cousins who are finish their last years in high school and those who are on their process of graduating from Universities. Students that influence me also are those students who are fighting to continue their education, those who are educating immigrant students who also want to continue their education but aren’t citizens but want the government to recognize them as citizens and allow them to continue their education. Students that are considered minorities who are fighting to continue their education and to keep motivated in continuing school beyond high school, those who have future goals set for themselves. Where I am today is where I want to be and hope to continue to be influenced positively by others.
